Abstract:The UK market for travel and tourism is examined in terms of inbound, outbound and domestic markets. The market was hit by recession and the Gulf War in 1991. Volume of overseas visitors to the UK fell by 5 percent to 17 million, expenditure was down 2 percent to GBP 9.6 billion. Slight fall in UK outbound travel was seen with visits abroad to 33 million (1 percent increase). The UK has a tourism spending deficit of GBP 2.8 million. Domestic tourism market was worth GBP 10.2 billion in 1990. The USA is the largest source market. France is the largest destination market with over 70 percent of visits from the UK. Per capita expenditure on tourism was an estimated GBP 390 in 1991.
