Abstract: | Trends in travel and tourism in Western Europe are covered, and the leading economies are focused on. Tourism including its infrastructure and related supply side industries (for example aviation) has become the world's largest single industry. The key trends are: Increasing numbers of people take two or more holidays per year. Considerable growth in long-haul travel is seen. Beach holidays remain the most popular type, but there is a growing trend from passive to active holidays. Theme parks are the fastest growing new type of leisure facility. The total number of world tourist arrivals in 1990 was around 430 million. Spain has the most substantial trade surplus, reaching USD 17 billion which seems to be exaggerated. |
