Abstract: | Tangier is changing fast. Its focus, commercially, is rapidly turning to tourism and Europe is the target market. The proposed road tunnel link beneath the Straits of Gibraltar to link Tangier with the Iberian peninsular, due for completion in 2001, can only serve to strengthen Tangier's strategic position as one the principal gateway between Europe and Africa. During those years, as well as a being a popular tourist destination for Gulf Arabs, Westerners and well-heeled Moroccans, Tangier attracted free-wheeling financiers and speculators with its favorable tax laws and free-port status. The author provides the city guide with description of tourist attractions: the medina, Grand Soco, Sidi Bouabid Mosque, Petit Soco, the mausoleum of Ibn Battuta and others. |
