Abstract:The Czech Republic was the quickest of the central European countries to build up a thirving tourist trade in the 1990s aided by the relatively smooth transition to democracy of the Velvet Revolution in 1989 and the active encouragement of foreign investment by the iconic President Havel. The combination of a stable government and the beautiful historica capital of Prague enabled an unpreciated boom to take place in Czech tourist trade with foreign tourist numbers in registered accommodation more than doubling in seven years to reach 5 million by 1997.
