Abstract:The author considers how firms in different technological and market positions employ foreign R&D to strengthen their technological capabilities. The article explores technology transfer issues and absorptive capacity arguments in order to analyze the various technological capabilities of leading and lagging companies. The author presents a new strategic rationale for analyzing knowledge seeking FDI. Data was gathered among Japanese manufacturing firms about their foreign R&D investments, and based on this panel dataset, it is shown how Japanese companies making foreign R&D investments are usually non-dominant market share firms and technologically advanced companies across various industries. Through the consideration of companiesÂ’ technological and market share positions the article exposes significant factors that affect the companiesÂ’ usage of foreign R&D investments as a strategy to strengthen their technological capabilities.
