| Abstract: | Ten years ago, environmental management was criticized as "utopian" by representatives of the general management theory. The criticism referred, on the one hand, to the absence of theoretical foundations pertaining to the relations between organizations and the natural environment. On the other hand, it referred to the widespread credulity of a win-win-relation of economical and ecological success. This article illustrates how the rationality behind sustainability could make environmental management more realistic and combine it with the scientific inquiries made of general management theory.
