Abstract: | Executives who get derailed from the fast track typically view themselves as failures. Arguments are presented that slowdown at mid-career can be an opportunity for the earlier fast-trackers to enter into a state of reflection and learn new ways of looking at themselves and others. Specific assumptions about upward mobility are outlined. Different categories of fast-trackers are examined: junior stars, mid-careerists, senior statesmen. The changes in their position and opportunities from 1986 to 1988 are characterized using interviews and follow-up interviews. The influence of work relationships on being promoted is indicated. Several lessons to be learned are summarized. The link between learning and derailment is considered. |
