Abstract:This paper studies whether academic achievement is a significant factor of employment status in the Italian labor market: are new entrepreneurs emerging from the top or bottom end of the graduate ability distribution? Is the cream of the graduate crop pulled into self-employment thanks to the higher expected earnings or are lower degree score students pushed into entrepreneurship by having few alternatives? Our data indicate a strong negative relation between academic achievement and self-employment status, i.e., the best graduates are skimmed into wage and salary work.
