Abstract:In Italy, the "albergo diffuso" provides a new option to traditional tourist accommodations, such as hotels, bed and breakfast accommodations (B&Bs) or farmhouses. It is part of a formula for accommodation capacity especially suitable for small rural centres and it also represents a formula for sustainable economic development in numerous tourist destinations because of its very limited effect on the environment. Additionally, this formula does not require any new structures but rather seeks to restore and recuperate existing houses in accordance with local cultural and historical characteristics. This allows the economic development of small rural destinations and the avoidance of depopulation.
