Abstract: | This study aims to reappraise the nature and role of interpretive flexibility (here as: int-flxty.) but giving as much consideration to how an information system's (IS) technical characteristics might limit its ability to be int-flxty., as we do to its potential for social construction. This paper uses the results of 2 in-depth case studies to propose a re-conceptualization of the role of int-flxty. In short, this model helps explain how the initial interpretations of stakeholders are significantly influenced by the scope and adaptability of the IS's functionality (as: fncty.) . Stakeholder interpretations will then, in turn, influence how the IS's fncty. is appropriated and exploited by users, to allow divergent interpretations etc. |
