Abstract:This paper examines the direct and indirect effects of job security on withdrawal cognitions. Stage 1 of the analysis examined the operational measures used to assess these structural relationships. Confirmatory analysis supported the differentiation among the theoretical constructs of job security, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and withdrawal cognitions. Results replicated and extended the former findings regarding the independence of job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Results from the structural analysis suggest the relation often noted between job security and withdrawal cognitions is explained by job security's relations with two intervening constructs, job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Finally, only organizational commitment directly affected withdrawal cognitions.
