Abstract:In the history of business, access to recent and reliable information has always been a central problem. This article is concerned with the role of information and communication technology in internetional trade in the nineteenth century. Telegraph - world's first modern instrument of informational technology - had a wide-ranging impact on business, though to refer to it as a revolution is an exaggeration. It replaced the old postal correspodence, which had been used to obtain data and prices for centuries. In nineteenth century, information technology replaced telegraph, reducing information costs and improving the quality of information.
