Abstract:Inward operations have received much less attention than outward ones, relative to the volume of internationalization research. This paper deals with this imbalance focusing on the degree to which firms import, how imports started relative to exports, and what import-related factors affect exporting (hereafter as: exp-g). Based on survey results of Finnish SMEs, it is suggested that responding firms rate management interest, limited domestic market, and inquiries from buyers as the most significant incentives to start exp-g. Import-experienced exporters (as: expts.) assign higher ratings on nearly all export incentives, while pure expts. consider themselves more dependent on governmental support. Importing as such has a comparatively modest, yet statistically significant, influence on exp-g.
