Abstract: | In Finland, the food industry (here as: f-ind-y.) is the 4th largest branch of industry after metal and engineering, forest and chemical industries. The Finnish f-ind-y. is characterized by small and medium sized firms (SMEs). This study aims at describing and analysing market sensing in the f-ind-y. in the province of Pirkanmaa (as: P-maa). The data was gathered using a mail survey (in 2006) and statistically analyzed through the SPSS package. Three empirical dimensions in market sensing were elaborated by factor analysis. It is concluded among others that companies in the f-ind-y. in P-maa, especially the smaller ones, should pay greater attention on market sensing in the future. The information collected and analyzed did not always lead to concrete measures for improving the business by strengthening competitive advantage. The use of customer databases should be intensified in the f-ind-y. in P-maa. Even larger companies do not take enough advantage of the potential provided by the customer databases. |
