Abstract: | This paper explores the sporadically constructed meanings for reputation in the small business context. It is argued that viewing reputation as a social construction makes it possible to uncover and understand the variety of meanings attached to the concept in small businesses. Based on 25 thematic interviews with owner-managers, four meanings for reputation are built: reputation i. as an economic resource, ii. as social recognition, iii. as a restrictive control mechanism, and iv. as a risk for personal status. In addition, explored is the variety of discursive events in which these meanings are created. Reputation is further emphasized as a phenomenon in which a small business becomes identified with its owner-manager etc. |
