Abstract:The costs of information storage, retrieval and management to both government and industry are tremendous. Data processing has not eliminated paper; it has probably created more. While the use of technology may save time in the generation and manipulation of data, the product of the technology - more data and information - may require still more resources for its management. This is one of the reasons the concept of information resource management (IRM) was developed. USA federal government agencies have established organizations to bring together the entire range of information-related activities. All the policies and procedures implemented within the IRM function are reviewed.
