Abstract: | The article is concerned with the question of how to govern and to coordinate long-term complex exchange relations. Based on theoretical elaborations it is shown that these transactions can be governed adequately neither via the market nor by hierarchical coordination. Therefore the problem cannot be solved by hybrids seen as "intermediate" between market and hierarchy; rather the dichotomy "market/ hierarchy" has to be supplemented by a third category. Consequently, this article questions the possibility of an efficient coordination mechanism which is able to govern long-term complex exchange relations, and identifies "self-commitment" as a reliable and flexible way of handling such transactions. Finally, the paper shows that "self-commitment" is by no mean an idealistic fiction but a ubiquitous reality. |
