Abstract:The potential productivity gains offered by fourth generation languages and relational database management systems are virtually precluded by the complexity of the data within the typical corporate database. The real answer is to work toward establishing fourth genaration data, the guiding principle of which should be "one fact per field". Comparisons between third and fourth generation languages as well as data are made. The problems of transition from one to the other are discussed. Consequences for the system design are outlined. Many ways to locate data are clarified. The longer restructuring is put off, the more tangled and complex the database jungle gets.
