Abstract:Saluting illustrates the dynamic relationship between individual action and expression and social structures. It also reflects the military hierarchy and provides a medium for the expression of the individuals' attitudes toward the system.Specific examples, conventions, and categories of saluting at the United States Army are presented on the basis of personal experiences.Saluting is an example of the institutionalization of inequality and conformity that distinguishes the military from main stream American society.
