| Abstract: | While there is a reasonable understanding of the economics of urban informational sector (UIS), there is little known about its politics. What facilitates or impedes the political mobilization of self-employed UIS workers as a powerful interest group? And what will it take for such a group to form political alliances with labour organizations in the formal sector? Key findings are highlighted and then the various factors considered uniting and dividing these workers. It is explained why an alliance between formal and informal sector workers is rare, even though they have much in common. Finally, some questions are listed for future research on the UIS's relationship with governments and political parties. |
