Abstract:Before independence in 1990, Namibia was little more than a provincial outpost in South Africa from which it imported virtually everything it consumed. Today, this vast south-west African country has set itself a target which stops at nothing short of total economic independence in less than two decades. Along the way, it could well become the industrial power-house of Southern Africa. The author outlines the country's potential. Although Namibia raised its own flag over its soil in 1990, it remains tied to South Africa by a thick economic umbilical cord.
