Abstract: | American and European companies have made amazing improvements through lean production. Linking these individual breakthroughs, creating a lean enterprise, is the next step towards superior performance. But, individuals, functions, and companies have needs that conflict with those of the lean enterprise. The authors believe, however , that the lean enterprise can solve these conflicts by offering careers that alternate between concentration on a value chain and knowledge building, turning functions into schools, a sharper focus for companies, and implementing a new code of behaviour. |
