Abstract:There is an extensive literature that examines the retirement behavior of older workers. This research has focused mainly on the effects of social security , private pensions, disability insurance , and health status. One factor that has not received much attention is the role of health insurance. In this paper, the authors address this gap by examining the effect of state and federal "continuation of coverage" mandates on the retirement decision. These mandates grant individuals the right to continue purchasing health insurance through a previous employer for a specified number of months after leaving the firm.
