Abstract:This article demonstrates that the restructuring and privatizing of Poland's Szczecin shipyard could provide a model for transforming state enterprises in other formerly communist countries. When its manager was hired to run the Szczecin shipyard, it was deeply in debt, and its survival was in peril. Today it is the world's dominant producer of midsize container ships. The feat is a catalogue of successful restructuring initiatives.
