Abstract:In recent years, growth theorists have emphasized the role of knowledge as an important determinant of economic growth but the character of knowledge has been less explored. one reason for this is the difficulties to measure knowledge and to trace knowledge flows. The difficulties in tracing knowledge flows has generated some scepticism about the relevance of formal models based on knowledge spillovers, and a reluctance to use these models. Jaffe et al. (1993) , however, argue that knowledge flows do leave paper trails in the form of references in patent documents.
