Abstract:The counterpart in international trade law of the Biblical injunction to "love thy neighbour as thyself" is the national obligation. This usually requires that the products (and sometimes also producers) of other countries to be treated no less favourably than national products (and producers). The national treatment obligation in the General Agreement on Trade and Services (GATS) is wider in scope but more limited in application than that in the GATT.
