Abstract:In 1970, over 70 percent of the time of international personnel professionals in multinationals was spent on expatriate compensation. Today, HR involvement in expatriate compensation remains very high, but 10 percent of the companies have outsourced the function and another 9 percent are considering doing so. This article discusses briefly why expatriate compensation has been such an all consuming subject for international human resourcs professionals, traces the development of the most common compensation methodologies, assesses the current state of the field, and suggests some strategies for the future.
