| Abstract: | For a while things were going quite well in Russia. 1997 looked to be the year when its dynamic young banks won respectability abroad and cemented hegemony at home. The $1 billion Eurobond floated by the Russian government last winter removed the untouchable label from the economy as a whole, and banks were among the main beneficiaries. Syndicated credits from Western partners which began as a trickle in late 1996 turned into a steady stream, claims the author. |
