Abstract:The relative importance and generality of university patents has fallen at the same time as the sheer number of university patents has increased. The decrease appears to be largely the result of a rapid increase in the number of "low-quality" patents being granted to universities. The results show that it is possible to use citations to improve the usefulness of patent statistics as economic indicators. The economic usefulness of these data has been limited by the perceived noisiness.
