Abstract:The purpose of the profit margin inquiry is primarily a fact-finding one: to discover the structure of prices, in particular to ration of the selling value of output to the prime costs of production, in the different branches of industry. As such it should be regarded as part of a national-income-inquiry; since the classification according to the different types of 'costs' which make up the total value of output is essentially similar to the classification according to the different types of 'incomes' which make up the total national income.
