Abstract:The network success hypothesis assumes a positive relation btw. the networking activities of founders and a start-up's success. Both variables, the dependent one and the independent one, have been defined very differently. Firstly, this paper clarifies what network building means and what effects networks can have on entrepreneurial success. Secondly, it defines six possible measures for start-up success. The paper then critically surveys the empirical studies that have looked at the relation between founders' networks and entrepreneurial success. In a new model, the authors include qualitative characteristics of individual dyads, of the whole network, and the costs of building and maintaining a personal network (original in German).
