Abstract: | This study investigates the relationship btw. a firm's reputation (hereafter as: c-rep.) and financial performance (here as: f-perf). The results challenge the conventional wisdom since it is found that c-rep. does not impact firm value whereas corporate f-perf. improves c-rep. The policy implication of the findings is that the relation btw. c-rep. and f-perf. is not as straightforward as argued in the literature. This study does not question that c-rep. is vital for the survival of the firm in the long run, but argues that it may influence stock market performance via profitability and growth rather than having a direct impact on the stock markets. If management is concerned with enhancing shareholder value, it should be concerned with the business impact of c-rep. |
