Abstract:The authors consider the role of strategic HRM in companies that are operating internationally. An extensive research scheme is presented; it consists of questionnaires and case studies which show how the field of international HRM is transforming rapidly and there should be a better understanding of this development. The authors identify five organizational drivers of international HRM: (1) efficiency orientation, (2) global service provision, (3) information exchange, (4) core business processes and (5) localization of decision-making. Then the authors identify three enablers of high-performance international HRM that are developed in multinational enterprises: (1) HR affordability, (2) central HR philosophy and (3) HR excellence and transfer of knowledge. Different strategies for connecting these enablers and drivers are presented. These strategies in turn are carried out by certain important HR activities which are also presented in the article. At the end the authors introduce an introductory model that combines the mentioned drivers, enablers and HR processes.
