Abstract:The modern management theory mostly concentrates on what is new in the field and less on what could be learnt from the past research. The authors examine the critique that bureaucracy has received during recent years, and concentrate on two main areas; the new public management literature and its inspiration in the new literature of cultural entrepreneurialism. Both of these have promised to solve the problem of bureaucracy’s iron cage. By using classical political themes, such s oligarchy, democracy and the development of elite power, the authors explain why it would be important to consider this transubstantiation alchemical by combining the contemporary debates with the earlier wisdom and knowledge. The authors conclude on how essential it is to exploit earlier knowledge in order to recall the complexity of the hybridizations between assumed opposite organization models.
