Abstract:The authors consider the multinational corporation’s (MNC’s) decision to relocate its business unit/corporate headquarter (HQ) overseas. The authors argue that the changes in the internal configuration of the unit’s activities and the demands of the product markets make the business unit HQ move overseas, while the demands of external stakeholders, in particular global financial markets and stakeholders, make the corporate HQ move overseas. A study including information about 125 business unit HQs and 35 corporate HQs provides support for the hypotheses. The article underlines significant differences between business- and corporate-level strategies. Ways in which the MNC theory needs to be reconsidered are also suggested.
