Abstract:The aim of the article is to construct a mentoring assessment instrument, which is based on contemporary organizational life. The study presented in the article was a two-step process. In the first phase 24 mentees and mentors were interviewed about their mentoring experiences. The interview data was then analyzed and an instrument for measuring mentoring functions was developed. The second phase of the study consisted of testing the developed instrument. A large sample of mentees and mentors were studied with the help of the instrument in order to test its factor structure. An extensive statistical analysis of the data exposed eight different functions of mentoring, and the mentees and mentors were found to have same kind of views about the functions that occur in their relationships. All in all the results stand for an attempt to define mentoring in a current organizational context.
