Abstract:This article discusses a large and sustained nominal appreciation in 1996-8 that led to a serious and continuing over-evaluation of sterling. The author finds that one reason for this was that the exchange rate might react to such decisions in an erratic way. In this case the author suggests that the monetary framework be revised.
