Abstract:It is analysed how professionals within the same occupational group negotiate and construct their professional ideologies in different organizational locales. It is illustrated how there exist within a single organization numerous constructions of professionalism which are shaped by, and which shape, both organizational and institutional struggles and contradictions. There are important gaps between the formal representations of the professionalism project and the actual practice of "nursing". For trainee nurses these gaps are particularly apparent. They have to negotiate contradictory conceptions encountered in ward work and nurse training.
