Abstract:After the mining dispute of 1985, labour productivity rose significantly in 1986. An explanation to this productivity growth is proposed. The study connects the developments in the coal industry with those elsewhere in the economy. It also contributes to the debate on whether UK industrial relations have entered a new era in the 1980s. The three outcomes of the industrial relations process, productivity, wages and strikes, hang together and all indicate a new industrial relations.
