Abstract:During the 1980s, foreign company purchases of USA corporations and real estates reached record levels. The total value of USA acquisitions was 15 billion dollars in 1988, or less than one third the amount foreign firms spent on USA acquisitions. It is clear that the USA is already vulnerable to decisions of foreign investors and will become more vulnerable as their international debt mounts. Japan's massive trade surplus alone requires finding investments for an additional 80-100 billion dollars a year. This trend and its long-term effect on the USA economy is analysed.
