Abstract:Network location problems occur when new facilities must be located. The considered network location problems are continuous, in the sense that new facilities are allowed to be located at any points of the network, not just at vertices. An objective function to be minimized represents cost, which is usually nondecreasing in the distances between facilities. Optimal locations are wished to be found, ones that minimize the objective function while satisfying some constraints. In case the network is a tree, the approach leads to an equivalent mathematical programming problem which, for many cases of interest when each function is expressed using only maximization and summation operations on positively weighted arguments, is a linear program.
