Abstract:The same person rarely makes both a good administrator and an effective innovator. There should be two ladders through the system, to accommodate differences both in personality type and in the needs of the business. People should also have the chance to swap positions or tracks as they undergo change. Flexibility is a key aim, if staff are to achieve their potential. One tends to repress the talent of those who fail to conform, and assumes that the skills acquired in one job qualify someone to perform a totally unrelated task.
