Abstract:Affirmative action, as a means to achieving equal employment opportunity, has received broad, though sporadic, support from the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the federal government. The historical background of affirmative action in the United States is explored, and how federal support for it has changed since the Civil War is reviewed. Several recent USA Supreme Court cases deciding affirmative action issues are discussed, with speculation about the future of affirmative action in the light of these decisions. The implications of these rulings for human resource practitioners are considered. A collection of examples of proactive responses of some companies drawn from a recent official report is also presented.
