Abstract:The results of a survey conducted in Christchurch, New Zealand, are reported. This survey of general managers was devised to learn how they approached their work. The managers were asked to respond to a questionnaire listing ten different facets of managerial work. The methodology and findings are presented in the hope that they may be useful to other groups of general managers. It is shown that general managers vary considerably in the extent to which they operate as generalists. The essence of general management is linked to 1. strategic planning and financial control; 2. external relations; 3. internal business control. The role profile of a generalist is compared to the role profile of a specialist.
