Abstract: | The article is a summary of recent developments in theoretical economics about the role of government. First Adam Smith and market failure, then Lists infant industry argument are cited. Challenges to the benevolent, costless, social guardian view of government came from economics of information (Rosen), economics of regulation (Stigler), collective action (Olson), rent seeking (Averch and Johnson) and the idea of bureaucratic capture. |
