Abstract:Competitive advantage derives from cost leadership or differentiation gained on either a broad or narrow choice of segment scope. But competitive advantage is difficult to create and sustain. Innovation in the value chain or in the bundle of customer benefits is a key to success. As product offerings become increasingly homogeneous and the rate of strategy imitation accelerates, managers may need to examine less obvious and more sustainable dimensions in which to build competitive edge. In the markets studied, UK exporters appear to be more flexible in their credit strategies than German competitors.
