Abstract:The dichotomy between theoretical and applied models is analyzed. As an illustration of this dichotomy, theoretical approaches to the newsboy problem are criticised from a practical perspective and an alternative, practically oriented approach is described. It is suggested that managers often have justifiable grounds for avoiding many theoretical models of decision problems based on a perceived failure of these models to exhibit sufficient applied characteristics. It is concluded that it is important to appreciate the difference between the theoretical and applied perspectives.
