Abstract:Statutory organizations, set up by Parliament, are not unlike businesses in that changes, mergers, takeovers or even outright abolition take place. This article describes how English Nature, a result of the government's decision in 1989 to break up the former Nature Conservancy Council, has sought to give strategic direction to the organization which, whilst new, inherited the staff and attitudes of a body which had been abolished. People in organizations have an almost infinite amount of energy if they really understand and believe in what they are doing. The coming months and years will show whether English Nature has set this energy free and can direct it to achieving their strategic aims.
