Abstract:Corporate responsibility has become a major US public policy issue. Senate Democrats have devised a new accounting regulatory board and called for tougher criminal sanctions for corporate wrongdoers. This article considers the debate over public policies to promote global corporate responsibility in the United States and in Europe. The debate and the response of policymakers compared along with an explanation of how Europeans are developing a policy response encouraging corporate social responsibility. Finally, recommendations are made for US policymakers based on encouraging ethical behavior around the world. The paper provides a substantial list of references on this subject.
