Abstract:Today's exceptionally competitive marketplace requires that manufacturers fully satisfy their customer needs as cost efficiently as possible. To fulfill these dual, often competing objectives, many companies have adopted a focused-factory configuration. The paper states that focused factories segregate and separately monitor unique processes and services. Cycle times required to complete bottleneck operations become critical indicators for performance evaluation and cost control. The paper provides an opinion that in conjunction with cost variance analysis, cycle time metrics can be used to discover cycle-time efficiencies and non-value-added cost.
